Winter Warriors

by Marilyn Warren

This weekend I pulled on the warmest clothes I could find, climbed on a snowmobile and headed out onto Limerick Lake to take photos of some of our hardy Canadians who embrace the elements and pursue the pastime of ice fishing. It was the first time I had taken a close look at what actually happens out there on the ice in those little huts and was surprised at the technology and comforts they enjoyed. Their patience and resilience were commendable – and the bonding with family, friends and...dogs heartwarming. By the end of the shoot my fingers were frozen from holding the camera but the fishermen appeared warm and cozy, content to spend the day on the icy plains. Yet another example of how our great outdoors can be a year-round playground.

Portrait Possibilities

by Marilyn Warren in ,

Winter presents a wonderful opportunity for portraits in non-traditional settings – capturing a look that stands out from the typical green backdrop found during the summer months. This weekend I did a shoot by the Moira River taking advantage of the sun's final rays at day's end. A scattering of clouds added to the sky's dramatic statement and we used that to our advantage. Great hats, mittens and furry collars will give your shots character and interest, resulting in unique portraits. We can plan family photos that reflect how you and your family enjoy our Canadian winters: gather round the snowmobile, strap on those snowshoes or line up on those cross-country skis. You'll all have rosy cheeks and smiles on your faces – what a great image to have for next year's family holiday greetings to friends and family.

Winter Wonders

by Marilyn Warren

After two days of freezing rain and snowfall I'm sure that many are ready to hop the next plane and head to warmer climates. As I 'shovel and salt' I focus on the beauty and wonder that this season can bring and wish that for each of you. Whether you are on the road or close to home - have a safe and happy holiday season.

Best Wishes for "All Kinds of Wonderful" in 2014.

When the Stars Align

Last Friday night the next day's forecast was dismal – not what you want to see when you have an outdoor family photo shoot scheduled. Then the new day arrived – and with it came this gorgeous autumn morning! Caught off guard because of the previous forecast we quickly regrouped and made arrangements to meet as previously arranged. Best decision ever!

The lighting was beautiful. The autumn backdrop was breathtaking. And the family – the family was absolutely wonderful! As I've said so many times before, the best part of being a photographer is the people I get to meet.
